Dev Diwali in Banaras: A celebration where the ghats glow with a million lamps, reflecting the divine light and the spirit of devotion.

Dev Dipawali, also known as the “Diwali of the Gods,” is a spectacular festival celebrated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It takes place on the full moon night of the Hindu month of Kartika, fifteen days after Diwali. This festival is marked by the lighting of over a million earthen lamps (diyas) along the ghats of the Ganges River, creating a breathtaking sight. The celebration of Dev Dipawali is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. It commemorates the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. It is believed that on this day, the gods descend to Earth to bathe in the sacred Ganges, making it a spiritually significant event.

The rituals of Dev Dipawali include the Kartik Snan (holy bath in the Ganges), deepdan (offering of oil lamps), and the grand Ganga Aarti performed by priests at the Dashashwamedh Ghat. The festival also features cultural events, classical music performances, and vibrant processions of deities.

This festival beautifully showcases the complex and diverse culture of India. It brings together people from various backgrounds to celebrate their shared heritage and spirituality. The sight of the illuminated ghats, the sound of hymns and chants, and the aroma of incense create an atmosphere of unity and devotion, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of India.
